Built almost entirely of retrofitted dairy equipment, our original brewery could produce up to 6,500 barrels of beer per year in about 12,000 square feet of space. So Highland Brewery, which many locals consider the founder of the Asheville NC craft beer scene, has been doing it for more than 25 years. And even now, after the big brands have stolen the media spotlight, it remains one of the best breweries in Asheville. Operations began in the basement of downtown Asheville’s Barley’s Taproom, where Wong used retrofitted dairy equipment to create his beer. For nearly a year, Tomasulo and Alvarez told themselves that if they received this approval, or passed that hurdle, they’d keep going. In fall 2016, all the agreements fell into place, they were given the house, and they purchased the Bloodworth property with restrictive covenants. “We were laughing, like, ‘Great, we own a piece of property and a house. Now we’ve just got to put them together,’” says Alvarez. After the election, Tomasulo and Alvarez were keeping an open mind about how to engage with their passion for the city. When they learned that the Raleigh Historic Development Commission and Preservation North Carolina were fighting to save two century-old houses on Lenoir Street, they got to thinking.
Two years ago, an old house in downtown Raleigh was slated for demolition, with a big development planned to go in its place. But with the help of a historical commission, a remote control, and long nights and weekends filled with blood, sweat, and tears, that old house got a second chance. The home and amenities are well maintained. Every sense was considered in the decor from the moody parlor to the calm, minimalism of the guest room decor to the clean, light scent of the kitchen when you come in from the courtyard. They used natural light and lamps to great effect.

The tenderness of the chicken suggests a lot of attention to detail during cooking, and in a market that tends to overcook its meat, I appreciated that. The greatest challenge in all of this, though, is dining out. And I don't need my cashier staff to Stepford Wife me, but they came off as especially unengaged and uninterested. My suspicions were confirmed by my whopping 15 minute wait for food. Eight and Sand is going to want to cut that time down significantly if they want sustained success from the Uptown lunch crowd. Charlotte media has a hit it and quit it relationship with restaurants.
